Michael "Opie" Opferman

American Red Cross Instructor

Mike, known to many of his work acquaintances as "Opie," has over 27 years of federal law enforcement experience and recently completed his career with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Opie is an accomplished fraud investigator, having successfully investigated an array of crimes, including Human Trafficking, Credit Card Fraud, Benefit Fraud, and Contraband Smuggling, all of which led to successful prosecutions in the US District Court.


Opie was a founding member of the HSI Western Pennsylvania Document and Benefit Fraud Task Force in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force from 2012-2018 and the Pittsburgh Financial Crimes Task Force from 2008-2010.


He has completed training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers in Brunswick, Georgia; Harpers Ferry, West Virginia; the National Intellectual Property Rights Center in Crystal City, Virginia; and the National Firearms and Tactical Training Unit at Fort Benning, Georgia. He holds Certifications from the Department of Homeland Security as a Criminal Investigator, Fraudulent Document Identification Examiner, and Defensive Tactics Instructor.
